A million Thanksgivings and I remember each one for different reasons. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday and a special family tradition. It allows me to stop for a few days, breathe and remember why I’m grateful for the moments and the people in my life. My greatest challenge is to live in the present. I’ve written about this many times, and I think I’m learning to do that. It is important to be grateful for what you have and appreciate each second that you’re living. Take time to thank the people who make your life better just by being a part of it. I have many of those people in my life, and I hope you do too.
New York has cooled down a bit, and I’m finally able to really dig into my fall wardrobe. While I’m dressed in a little plaid skirt, and a wool camel trench coat, frolicking in Central Park, we will actually be spending Thanksgiving on the beach, with my sister this year. We are breaking the tradition of going to my parents’ house in Ohio, and we’ll be flying to St. Pete instead. It will be a whole new change of scene and I’m excited for it.
There are a few fall trends that I absolutely love for the season, and I incorporated several of them into this look. First of all, I love all of the plaid prints out there this fall. I’ll admit that plaid always feels like a challenge for me to pull off. It often feels too preppy for my style, and I struggle a bit. A plaid scarf is a safe bet to incorporate the print, but I wanted to pick a piece of clothing and show how I would make it work with my style. As you know, I love dressier, fancier pieces and my look is rarely casual. I love to really dress for events. However, I found a perfect plaid, wool mini skirt, and quickly fell in love (45% off online right now). The colors in the skirt grabbed my attention, and looked beautiful using a combination of burgundy, pink, black and camel.
Next I chose a sleeveless black, blouse (similar here) with a bow tied at the the neck. I love the neck design details on many of the blouses this season. It adds such a feminine look to the style. Keep in mind, when choosing this silhouette, that you can leave out a necklace. The bow at the neck is a perfect detail to take care of that. I kept my look on top fitted, by tucking the blouse into the black skirt. To compliment the black color of the blouse, I chose black tights (similar here) as well.
To finish my look, I found the most gorgeous camel, wool trench coat (45% off online right now). It pulled the accent, camel color from my skirt and worked perfectly. I took the belt of the trench and tied it tight in the back in order to wear the coat open and keep the look fitted, as well as and show off the rest of the outfit.
Don’t be afraid to combine brown and black or camel and black in your fall looks. Remember that these two colors act as neutrals and when combined correctly, they can definitely be worn together. While wearing these two basic colors, my plaid skirt acted as the pop of color and print, without being too overwhelming.
To accessorize, I wore black ankle boots (similar here), and carried a mini black bag (similar here). We have seen mini handbags all over this season, and I just loved the gold trim on this one. Lately, I’ve been loving simple, but statement gold earrings. I can wear them with any outfit. I found my recent favorites which are gold hoops (similar here). Of course I had to wear my staple Valentino sunnies as well. I can’t live without them.
The colors in the ensemble I styled are perfect for fall and I loved incorporating the plaid print into my look. Just remember, that you can always incorporate a trend into your fall wardrobe whether it be in a big or small way. Choose a plaid scarf if a skirt or blazer is too much for you. Also remember that your outerwear makes for a fabulous layering piece. By styling your look with an open coat, you can show off your full look, along with the pieces you put together. A contrasting length of a short skirt, but longer coat is a fun look.
I hope these ideas help you pull off your fall and Thanksgiving themed ensembles. Make sure to tune in after the holiday as we’ll be mixing it up with a few beachy posts from our trip. Wishing you a safe and fabulous Thanksgiving holiday. Remember what you are thankful for this year and make sure to tell those you love. Sending hugs and warm holiday wishes from NYC. xx
