Hello Valentines! The holiday of hearts is just 2 weeks away, and I’ve been busy styling a few looks to inspire your fancy night out with your beau, your bestie, or both! Typically I’d sport a little red cocktail dress for a night out, but I’ve got a new look for you. Meet the little red dress’s sassier, and older sister.
Now, by “older,” I don’t mean snoozy. I simply mean sophisticated, with an edgy twist. I found this double breasted, red dress (similar here), and instantly fell in love with the cape design detail at the shoulders. Capes are having a major moment this year, from the red carpet right down to your favorite styles you find at your local boutique. There is something so chic and elegant about them. I love the trim of the black buttons, and the belt that cinches at the waist to give the style a perfect fit.
Now there was only one thing missing. I added full length, fingerless, leather gloves to complete the look of the dress. This definitely adds an element of sass to the sophistication of the dress. The gloves are elegant, and functional as well. They add a leather sleeve to the dress, making it much cozier to wear in the winter.
If you notice, throughout my styling, I love adding texture to each of my looks. I can add leather, sequins, embroidery, or faux fur, and each of these details add interest to the style I choose. Try this with your own wardrobe and use creativity to enhance your look.
For the rest of my accessories, I chose my favorite Valentino ‘Rockstud’ Sunglasses, my black, YSL bag (similar here), and crystal earrings (similar here). I wore black, opaque tights (similar here), with black ankle boots (similar here). Thigh high boots would look incredible with this dress as well.
Now for the Valentine’s plans. I used to think it was all about the flowers, mushy notes, and romantic evenings. The movies make you believe that, don’t they? After a few years of marriage, I’ve realized Valentine’s Day doesn’t need to be planned out. In fact I like when it’s a bit spontaneous. A few of our favorite daytime activities in New York, include strolling through Central Park taking photos together, visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, wandering the streets of the Meatpacking District, and visiting Chelsea Market. We have fun together with simple plans. We don’t exchange gifts, yet we spend our money on adventures together. It means so much more to us than material purchases. We love to eat at home and cook together (well, Grant cooks and I watch), and we love to go out for champagne or dessert at the end of the night. A few of our favorite spots are the Tavern on the Green, and the Central Park Boathouse. Just remember, Valentine’s Day is just another holiday, so make it your own.
For our Sunday Funday, we strolled down Madison Avenue, picked up a few Valentine’s inspired treats from Ladurée, and walked home through Central Park. The weekend was relaxing yet productive.
So beauties, I hope I’ve inspired your Valentine’s look for the upcoming holiday. Remember to have fun with your ideas, and take a chance on your own style. Step out of your comfort zone and reinvent a brand new, sassy look. We’ll have a few more holiday posts coming soon, so stay tuned. Lots of love, from NYC. xx
