A Birthday Wish

Another candle on the cake. Another year in the books. Another year to reflect upon what was, but more importantly, another year to look forward, with hopes that this year will be better than the last. And you know what…it will be. It always is.

Each year, each minute of your life should be better than the last, if you open your eyes to take in the moments that matter. How many sunsets have crossed your curious eyes? How many times have you dug your toes into warm, grains of sand? How many times have you simply taken a breath of fresh air, and felt happiness in the few minutes you have by yourself? I love those moments. I’ve learned to love them even more this year.

Often we take such simple things for granted, yet when when I break down my life and really think about it, it’s always these small moments that I cherish most. They can be by myself, or with the ones I love. And in those moments, I feel lucky, and I feel grateful.

I say this often, but the big stuff in life may seem important. The house, the car, the dream destination, the high profile job, yet when it really boils down to it, you can’t take these things with you with you leave this world, but the memories do last a lifetime. Who did you share them with? Where were you? Was the sun shining on your face? Did your heart skip a beat? I hope it did.

I write this as I fly back to New York from a lovely family weekend, celebrating my brother and sister. It’s a late flight, and I wish I had booked something earlier. I could’ve gotten back at a decent time, prepared my things for the work day on Monday. I could have had dinner with Grant. Thoughts of my weekly responsibilities swirl through my mind, as the plane takes off.

As I glance out the window, the sun sets in a burst of color, over the bright, blue sky. Fiery colors line themselves up, in perfect gradient, and I watch with my eyes wide open.

Meant to be, I think to myself. This is most incredible sunset that I’ve ever seen, in all of the flights I’ve taken. I don’t need to do anything else for the next hour, but watch the colors burst in front of my eyes. Another one of the small moments to cherish. One of many.
